FIDE_Assembly_7
SPEECH OF GARRY KASPAROV ON THE PROPOSED AMENDMENTS IN FIDE STATUTES

Mr. Garry Kasparov said he appreciates the opportunity to address the Assembly and congratulated everyone of the achievement. After two years of turmoil and fights, we came to a compromise which will eliminate all grounds for grievances and complaints. As chess players, there are mistakes made which have to be analysed. We understand the importance of the rules. The fact that we all recognise the inefficiency of the rules drafted long ago and we all worked so hard to apply the rules of modern times, shows that the federations and FIDE stick to the principles and rules of the IOC. It does not mean we have no differences, but I think this is very natural, we will be fighting within one family and for reaching brighter future for chess. I appreciate FIDE emphasis on chess education and we have to penetrate the education system around the globe. Chess has no match and it is in our power to prove it in all continents. I work aggressively on this and a lot of work is being done by FIDE and it is a real patch to our success. We have not to look for weak spots and criticisms of the other side, we should concentrate on positive things, and not on who did what wrong in the past, but who can do something great in the future. We should have a noble common goal, and I will do my utmost to bring FIDE to a more prosperous and better future.

Round_8_ArmeniaIn the last round of the 40th World Chess Olympiad Armenia was matched against Hungary. Levon Aronian secured a perpetual against Peter Leko, and the other games continued.

After the time control Gabriel Sargissian drew the rook endgame against Ferenc Berkes, and Sergei Movsesian scored a crucial victory against Zoltan Almasi. Eventually Vladimir Akopian held Judit Polgar to a draw to mark the start of huge celebration for Armenian gold medal. Congratulations!

Russia employed their trademark strategy and signed two quick draws with Germany - both with black pieces. This worked perfectly as Vladimir Kramnik and Sergey Karjakin won with white to secure the overall 3-1 victory for Russia. Russia finished equal first on match points but with weaker tie-breaks and thus is awarded with the silver medal.

China was in good position to fight for the gold medal but a defeat in the match with Ukraine pushed them down in the standings to the 4th place. Vassily Ivanchuk won a nice attacking game against Wang Hao, while Pavel Eljanov outplayed Bu Xiangzhi. the other two games were drawn. With this victory Ukraine climbs up and grabs the bronze medal!

Hou Yifan and Antoaneta Stefanova drew, while Margarita Voiska beat Ju Wenjun. However, Zhao Xue and Huang Qian defeated their opponents to turn the tables and win the match.

Both Russia and China finished with 19 match points, but the tie-break awarded the gold medal to Russia, while China team had to console themselves with silver.

Ukraine demolished Germany 3,5-0,5 to secure the third place and the bronze medal.

Personal tribute to Gliga by his long time friend, Boris Kutin

Gligoric_top

In memoriam Svetozar Gligoric

To play against pieces? (Songs) strange, quite strange. But not for those who knew Svetozar Gligoric very well. It was not a coincidence that Gliga for his greatest book, in fact his biography, picked up such unusual title: I Play Against Pieces.

So, this means that chess is not a sport? No, not at all. Such way of thinking does not lead to the right answer. Enigma is deeper, it is Gligoric's axiom which he was following from the very beginning until very end. The objective is definitely a victory, but not in victory only. The point is victory in the most honest way. It is necessary to win the balance of the opponent's pieces and not a man who sits in the other side of the table.

Even though he was in Yugoslavia (everywhere, in all republics) extremely appreciated and popular, probably also is not a coincidence that the biggest chess power, the Soviet Union, issued the book before his homeland. Not only that: a big edition of 100.000 copies was sold out in record time.

This few lines say more about Gligoric than thousands of articles. Such an army of readers is the best proof who is who, what is was his worth. Gligoric liked writing very much. Even more than that, he enjoyed it as a reserve occupation. Also in writing is strictly complying with its laws in chess. A product can be good, beautiful only if it is starts well in the opening. If the work is at the leading edge. Exactly the same was with his written words. For him they were a mirror of personality, his view on the world.

Gliga was a simple and modest man, who did not want to live in the shadow. He liked people very much, people of all walks of life and all ages. With his typical good humoured smile he attracted people (absolutely not only chess people) in the very first moment for ever.

He liked people, but not too much noise. That was not his style. In very characteristic way he always escaped such "dangerous" situations. But the weight of his reputation was definitely a champion's one.

World Champion Mikhail Tal was his very close friend (as well Fischer who had very few real friends). No doubt that his assessment of Gligoric as a chess player was based only of knowledge of its true value: history will always recognise him as one of those who were immediately with the champions.

Even though he was a very rigorous chess professional, Gligoric drank life from myriads of other sources. Second place on the podium goes to music. His collection of records is certainly among the richest in the country. When he left the active chess (unearned defeats by ever weaker opponents never left him indifferent) he found time for his second big love and successfully embarks on a study of music composition. Less than three years ago he promised me to write European Chess Union anthem.

Football was also a passion, but he was not spectator only. For many decades, once a week with a whole generation of younger, (first of them was superstar Dragan Dzajic) played with him.

It is interesting that Gligoric never wrote about his losing candidacy for the FIDE Presidency in Buenos Aires in 1978. Ten or twelve years later he told me that his defeat actually was his win. "To me, not being elected was a great gift", he said, not even a little bid sad despite the behaviour of the Chess Federation of Yugoslavia, which completely failed to support and prepare for election of its favourite son.

"Chess for me is the fight on the board. This I like this I know. But outside of the chessboard I am weak. Really I am so happy and satisfied that was no punishment (election)."

I recommend that FIDE should have an annual award for Fair Play – The Gligoric Cup – in memory of such a great and fair player.

Investigative Committee will conduct a probe into the Kasparov matter

Chess great Kasparov faces jail for biting cop
Moscow, Aug 18, 2012, (IANS/RIA Novosti)

Russian grandmaster-turned-opposition activist Garry Kasparov, who supported the jailed Pussy Riot members, can be jailed over a clash with police where he allegedly bit a policeman.

Police said the 49-year-old Kasparov bit on the finger one of several officers dragging him away from a Moscow court where three Pussy Riot members were convicted Friday over an anti-Kremlin "punk prayer" at an Orthodox Christian cathedral.

The accusation can land Kasparov in jail for five years on charges of attacking a police officer on duty, the RBC Daily news website said.

Moscow police confirmed they were preparing to hand over the case to the Investigative Committee, Russia's analogue of the FBI, which will conduct a probe into the matter.

Kasparov claimed police arrested him for no reason as he was giving an interview, twisting his arms and kicking him in the crotch on the way to the police van. He said he would sue police over the incident.

Kasparov also denied biting anyone and said the officer in question, Denis Ratnikov, could have run afoul of a police dog.

A police spokesman said the force was willing to conduct an examination to compare Kasparov's bite to that of their service dogs.

City police never specified why the activist was detained. More than 50 people were held Friday by the Khamovnichesky district court, where the Pussy Riot members were given jail terms of two years for hooliganism and inciting religious hatred.

Kasparov, who retired from chess in 2005, is one of the most ardent critics of President Vladimir Putin. He has supported Pussy Riot, who claim they were punished by the Kremlin for mocking its alliance with the church, which endorsed Putin's presidential bid.
